Washington police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who led them on a chase through the West End early Thursday before abandoning the vehicle on Wayne Street in Canton Township.

City police were on patrol about 2:30 a.m. going north on Hart Avenue when a gray Chevrolet pickup truck was seen going east in the 700 block of Ewing Street at a high speed. The truck failed to stop at a stop sign. The driver then veered the vehicle toward two men standing on the sidewalk before “cracking” the exhaust on the truck.

The officer tried to close the distance between his cruiser and the truck so he could get a license plate number, but the truck sped off. The truck went through another stop sign before turning north on McCarrell Avenue. Police activated the lights and sirens on the cruiser and pursued the vehicle.

Police said the truck then turned onto Buena Vista Street, went through another stop sign and turned onto Ondrock Street. The driver abandoned the truck in the 500 black of Wayne.

Police learned that the license plate on the truck was no longer registered to a vehicle. The vehicle identification number indicated it was owned by a Pittsburgh man. The inspection sticker came back to a shop in West Alexander. Police also found discount tags from several stores in the truck.

A witness who saw the driver flee from the truck told police the man was white, wearing a black hat, black jacket and blue jeans.
