NEW CASTLE – New Castle Area School District hired six part-time police officers so the Western Pennsylvania district can have an armed officer in each of its seven buildings.
The district, about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, previously had only one officer, a city patrolman assigned to its junior-senior high school.
The new officers were hired at Wednesday night’s school board meeting and officials hope to have them in the schools by Jan. 2.
The district is hiring the officers because of the school shooting last week in Newtown, Conn.
Similarly, officials with Altoona Area School District 85 miles east of Pittsburgh have made arrangements with Altoona and Logan Township police to have officers add schools to their regular patrol duties. The officers also will make themselves visible inside the schools on a regular basis.
