Burgettstown Area schools were closed Friday because of a threat of violence posed on social media sites late Thursday night.

According to a news release from the district, Smith Township police are investigating the threats. Police and school administrators ask that parents “take an active role in monitoring their children’s use of social media.”

Anyone with information about the threats is encouraged to call police at 724-947-5069.

An early dismissal had already been scheduled Friday in anticipation of the holiday vacation. Classes are scheduled to resume Jan. 3.
