Two groups of veterans not represented on a memorial outside Canonsburg Borough Building will get the recognition they deserve Saturday.
Those who served in the Civil War and the Global War on Terror will be recognized during a ceremony at 11 a.m. in front of the borough building at 68 E. Pike St.
In a community known for patriotism, Mayor David L. Rhome said this is the first time that he can remember a ceremony in honor of Veterans Day.
Rhome learned of the omission a few months ago. Working with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, the Washington County Veterans Affairs office was notified. They made arrangements to get the markers that will be placed at the memorial.
“We talked about just placing the markers out there but then decided we need to recognize these veterans,” Rhome said.
Guest speakers include Ed Snarey, past Post 191 commander; U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Michael Busovicki, an Iraq War veteran; and state Rep. Brandon Neuman, D-Canonsburg.
Also participating in Saturday’s program will be members of VFW Posts 191 and 553, the VFW Post 191 Honor Guard and Boy Scout Troop 1300.
