An early morning crash snarled traffic on Interstate 70 eastbound for much of Thursday in South Strabane Township.

State police said a tractor-trailer driven by Rene Burruel III, 37, of Chino, Calif., was headed east in the left lane of the highway near the south junction with Interstate 79 about 4 a.m. when the rig went off the road. Burruel steered back onto the highway, but the tractor-trailer rolled over and came to rest blocking the left lane. It was also partially in the median.

Traffic going east was slowed and backed up at times to the north junction with I-79. Neither Burruel nor his passenger, Avelino Partida, 25, of San Diego, Calif., was injured, police said.

South Strabane fire Chief Scott Reese said police told them that the driver’s manifest indicated the rig was carrying food. Reese said there was no fuel spill, nor was the trailer torn open in the crash.

“I imagine the biggest issue is off-loading,” Reese said.

Also assisting at the scene was the state Department of Transportation and Ambulance and Chair.
