Lions encourage youthful artists
WAYNESBURG – Malayna Poche, a seventh-grade student at Margaret Bell Miller Middle School, took the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning the local Peace Poster contest sponsored by the Waynesburg Lions Club.
Approximately 22 students in Colby Love’s and Mark Kuhn’s art classes at MBM participated in this competition.
Eleanor Chapman from the Waynesburg Lions Club, along with Justin Stephenson, assistant principal at MBM, and John Lipscomb, principal, judged the posters.
The posters were evaluated on the three criteria: originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme “Imagine Peace.”
Many of the posters are on display in the window at First Federal Savings and Loan in Waynesburg.
The top three winners will advance to the district level of competition to be judged on Nov. 17.
These posters are among the more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 25th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest.
Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people.
One grand prize winner and 23 merit awards will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations.
The 23 merit award winners each will receive a certificate and cash award of $500.
