ROGERSVILLE – West Greene School Board awarded a contract Thursday for replacing chairs and repairing the floor in the middle-senior high school auditorium.

The board also agreed to advertise for bids for the equipment that will later be needed to air condition the middle-senior high school.

The board awarded a contract for the chairs and flooring to the MacBracey Corp. of Washington, which submitted a bid of $171,700.

The company’s proposal was the only one received by the district for the project; however, the district is pleased with the proposal, Superintendent Thelma Szarell said.

The board waived a requirement that MacBracey have an approved apprenticeship/training program. It was noted that though the company is nonunion it will pay prevailing wages.

The project is expected to begin at the start of the new year, after the holiday season has ended and at a time when the auditorium will not be needed for several months.

The board approved a separate motion agreeing to pay district architect Hayes Design Group $14,000 to oversee the project.

The board also authorized bidding for equipment that is expected to be used to air condition the school. Work on that project is expected to begin next summer.

The equipment will allow the district to air condition each room in the building. Currently only the cafeteria, library and office areas are air conditioned.

The board approved a change in the initial plan for air conditioning to employ a chiller system instead of individual independent air conditioning units. The chiller system is expected to be more cost effective, Szarell said.

The board also agreed to install a door “buzz-in” system at the middle-senior high school at a cost not to exceed $1,000.

Board members noted the system should have been included by the architect in plans for renovations completed this past summer, which included the replacement of the doors.

The board voted to hire the district’s former director of facilities, Victor Antill, to serve in that position on a temporary basis.

Antill will be paid $250 a day, not to exceed 10 days a month. The board last month had voted not to extend the contract of Mike Pierson, who held the position.

The board approved childbearing leave for special education teacher Ashton Wilson from Nov. 19 through the end of the school year. Drew Dindal, who has served as a substitute, was hired to replace her.
