State and Chartiers Township police are trying to determine whether two armed robberies that occurred within two hours of each other Tuesday morning are related.
The Subway restaurant, Route 519, Somerset Township, was robbed at 7:10 a.m., state police said. Two hours later, Chartiers police were called to the Kwik Fill, West Pike Street.
A car pulled into the Subway lot and two men got out of the vehicle, said Trooper Thomas Schuster. One of the men went into Subway, left and then returned to the store about four minutes later.
“He went in and demanded money,” Schuster said. “He brandished what he claimed to be a gun.”
After getting cash from the clerk, he got back into the vehicle’s passenger seat. The driver then turned onto Route 519 in the direction of Interstate 70.
Schuster said the robber is white, at least 6 feet tall, with a thin build. He wore a dark, hooded shirt and ski mask.
At 9:15 a.m., Chartiers police were called to the Kwik Fill.
Chief James Horvath said a tall, thin white man, about 18 to 20 years old walked into the station, pointed what appeared to be a gun at the clerk and demanded money.
“There had been a customer in the store, but the robber waited until that person left before pulling out the weapon,” Horvath said. “He pointed the weapon directly at the clerk.”
After getting cash, he fled from the store. Horvath said police learned that he got into the passenger side of a small, dark car that was parked on a side street near Front Street and Liekar Lane. The car turned onto Pike, going towards Washington. Horvath said police arrived within 90 second of getting the call.
Local schools were alerted as a precaution until it was determined the suspect was no longer in the area.
The robber reportedly wore a light-colored hooded shirt and jeans. Horvath said the robber did not cover his face.
Anyone with information about the Subway robbery is asked to call Schuster at 724-223-5200. Anyone who might have been in the area of Kwik Fill at the time of the robbery is asked to call township police at 724-745-8030, ext. 215.
