CANONSBURG – Initial plans to hold off filling the director of public works position for Canonsburg Borough have changed.
Borough council plans to meet next week to interview candidates for the position and to approve the preliminary budget.
Council set 7 p.m. Nov. 20 as the time to meet and consider approval of the 2013 budget. Interviews for the new public works director will be held before and after the council meeting that night.
The public works position has been vacant since Chester Osiecki retired last month. But council had discussed over the summer not filling the vacancy upon his retirement in order to save money for the new liner for the Town Park pool.
But $125,000 in unexpected donations for the new liner has allowed council to reconsider hiring a director.
Manager Terry Hazlett said there were 30 applicants for the position and that number has been pared down to six people who will be interviewed.
Chairman John Bevec said there may be a tax increase of one mill in the 2013 budget for the park.
Also at last night’s meeting, a new 10-year agreement with the Frank Sarris Public Library was approved by council. The agreement calls for a contribution from the borough based on taxable real estate. The amount is about $12,000 per year.
