COAL CENTER – No one was injured Tuesday when an elderly woman crashed her car into the side of the Coal Center post office.

Southwest Regional police said Julia Hartley, 87, of 131 Harrison Road, Coal Center, refused medical treatment and drove home after she mistakenly used the gas pedal rather than the brakes and her car jumped a concrete parking divider and struck the brick building at 109 Spring St.

The 10:51 a.m. accident caused a 4-foot-wide hole in a wall, pushed in a larger area of bricks and knocked a small desk across a room inside the building, police said. The post office planned to send a building inspector to Coal Center after closing the post office, with tentative plans to relocate services to one in neighboring California.
