Waynesburg U. students visit Guatemalan children’s home
This past week during Thanksgiving break, 18 Waynesburg University students served at the Nutritional Center and Home for Children, Guatemala.
Led by Heidi Szuminksy, director of donor and alumni relations at Waynesburg University and her husband, Brandon Szuminsky, lecturer of communication at Waynesburg University, the group volunteered in Guatemala from Nov. 17 to Nov. 24.
This trip marked the 11th year that students have assisted the Franciscan nuns at the children’s home.
In addition to the Nutritional Center and Children’s Home, the Patzun mission included a community hospital, Hospital Corpus Cristi Patzun. The Rotary Club of Guatemala North recently made a donation to the hospital. A plaque outside the hospital commemorates their donation.
“It was no surprise to see that the Rotary Club in Guatemala is helping those in need,” said local Rotarian Heidi Szuminsky. “One of the goals of Rotary International is the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Almost everywhere I travel, I see Rotarians doing good in their own communities and reaching out to other communities across the world.”
