Coroner, Pa. game officials differ on man’s death

SWISSDALE – A county coroner and the Pennsylvania Game Commission are at odds over what killed a central Pennsylvania man last month.
The Clinton County coroner says 62-year-old Gary Lininger of Woodward Township man died from a bear attack on Oct. 16. The state Game Commission, however, believes that Lininger died when a tree fell on him.
Lininger’s body was found several days after his death, outside his secluded mountain home near Lock Haven.
The coroner said that while the victim was injured when a tree he was cutting fell on him, it was not enough to kill him.
But state wildlife officials said there are no other documented wild bear attacks that have resulted in death in Pennsylvania.
