The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and Greene Arc Inc. will host a seminar Dec. 5 on hiring people with disabilities.

Local employers and businesses are invited to attend the breakfast meeting from 9 a.m. to noon in the Benedum Dining Hall at Waynesburg University to learn about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.

Pam Zotynia, executive director of The Arc of Luzerne County, will speak about ways to develop a successful program focusing on employing individuals with disabilities and her experience with the issue.

Zotynia, as executive director of The Arc of Luzerne County, developed a professional relationship in 2008 with Lowe’s Regional Distribution Center. She assisted with the development of the company’s Outreach Program, which provides an avenue of entry to employment for people with disabilities.

The program was piloted in Pittston. As a result of its success, Lowe’s now has similar programs in every distribution center in the country. The program also has become a model for other businesses interested in exploring the development of similar programs.

Zotynia also serves as a volunteer on the board of directors of The Arc of Pennsylvania and chaired the employment study group that resulted in the development of The Arc of Pennsylvania’s position statement on employment for people with disabilities.

Information also will be available at the seminar to assist employers in connecting with the support available through various government incentives and local resources.

The seminar is funded with money from the CMS Medicaid Infrastructure Grant. It is free, but registration is required.

Employers interested in learning about the subject can register at info@thearcofluzernecounty.org, or by calling 724-627-5511.

Greene Arc is a nonprofit corporation providing residential, vocational, day support, job opportunities, advocacy and mental health and recovery services to people with disabilities in Greene and surrounding counties.
