An Olympic bronze medalist will be recognized Saturday when a marquee acknowledging his accomplishment more than 40 years ago is unveiled in Canonsburg.

Bill Schmidt, a graduate of Canon-McMillan High School, won the medal in the javelin event at the games held in Munich, Germany. Mayor David Rhome has declared Saturday as Bill Schmidt Day.

After graduating from high school, Schmidt was a track star at North Texas State University and a worldwide competitor during his career in the military.

The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on East Pike Street near Ashland Avenue.
