The start of the holiday season gets under way today in Canonsburg as it hosts its annual Old-Fashioned Christmas celebration.

For the first time, the annual Santa Luncheon will be held at Frank Sarris Public Library at 35 N. Jefferson Ave.

The event for children is by reservation only and includes a photo with Santa and a holiday gift bag.

Other events are open to the public without reservations, including Christmas crafts for children between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Canonsburg Middle School Chorus also will perform at noon at the library.

Additional activities in the downtown include a Christmas Craft and Vendor Fair at St. Patrick’s Church from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; tours at the Canonsburg Fire Department from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and hay rides leaving from the PNC Bank lot and train rides from the Luksis lot, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. H&R Block on Pike Street will provide hot chocolate from noon to 2 p.m.

This year, the holiday event is being sponsored by the Main Street Program in conjunction with the Greater Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce.

On Sunday, the borough’s live nativity will be in the Luksis parking lot next to the borough building from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, there will be a carol stroll to the live nativity.

At 7:15 p.m. the public will walk back to the church for refreshments. Luminaria will line both sides of the street.

The manger has been set up in front of the borough building by the Knights of Columbus, along with a holiday tree and a seasonal sign, by the Chamber of Commerce.
