The state Department of Transportation recently launched a pair of voluntary programs aimed at saving lives by helping get information to first responders quickly in emergency situations.

PennDOT’s Emergency Contact Information program offers state ID holders the opportunity to log into a secure database and list two contacts that can be accessed by law enforcement officials in the event of an emergency. The Yellow Dot program utilizes a special sticker placed on a vehicle’s rear window to alert first responders that a form containing the driver’s emergency contacts and medical information can be found in the glove compartment.

“Both of these programs speak for people when they can’t speak for themselves, so medical concerns can be addressed and contacts can be reached as quickly as possible,” Gov. Tom Corbett said Nov. 9 in a news release. “When someone is in a crash or they find themselves in an emergency situation, it’s critical that emergency responders quickly find out as much as they can about the victim.”

While both programs are used in vehicle crashes, the Emergency Contact Information program also can be used for other emergencies.

“Technology is a wonderful thing,” said Southwest Regional police Chief John Hartman. “(It) has enhanced our ability to help people in need.”

He said any programs that assist first responders in obtaining information are definitely positive.

For those who tend to let their vehicle’s glovebox become cluttered with documents, Hartman recommended using the Yellow Dot program as an opportunity to do some housecleaning. He also advised participants to limit the personal information they keep in their vehicle to that recommended by PennDOT.
