A Donegal Township man was arrested Tuesday morning after township police found him with guns and several prohibited offensive weapons, including a throwing star and double-edged Medieval battle axe.

Robert Lee Herring, 28, of 119 Crane Road, Claysville, was arraigned before District Judge Ethan Ward on three counts of persons not to possess firearms, 15 counts of having prohibited offensive weapons and 11 counts of possessing drug paraphernalia.

Donegal police Chief Max Oravetz said police received a tip Herring reportedly had the weapons following a domestic disturbance at his home. Police were told that Herring had swords, knives and ninja-type weapons along with drug paraphernalia and suspected marijuana.

“Herring is a convicted felon and is also on the Megan’s Law list, so he shouldn’t have any weapons,” Oravetz said.

Herring has been convicted of felony charges including theft, receiving stolen property and sexual abuse of children as well as several misdemeanor charges, police said.

Police obtained a search warrant from Ward that was executed Friday. During the search, police found three guns including a loaded rifle. He told police the weapons belong to his mother, who does not live with him, and that he used them for hunting.

Also found during the search were a three-bladed throwing star, six swords, four knives, machete and ax. Oravetz described one of the weapons as a strap that wraps around the hand and arm with knives sticking out of it.

“He said he was a collector,” Oravetz said of Herring’s reason for having the weapons.

Herring was placed in Washington County Jail on $50,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 11 before Ward.
