Community Action seeks volunteers for income tax assistance program

Community Action Southwest is seeking volunteers in Washington and Greene counties for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The program provides low- to moderate-income households with free tax filing services, protecting residents from predatory or expensive filing services, and ensuring families get the maximum return at no cost to them. CAS will offer VITA at sites including Canonsburg, Charleroi, Donora and Washington in Washington County and Carmichaels and Jefferson in Greene County. Sites will be open in February and March. Community members interested in assisting with this program are invited to attend a volunteer open house at the following locations: n Nov. 8 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Community Action Southwest office at 58 E. Greene St., Waynesburg. n Nov.13 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the John K. Tener Library, 638 Fallowfield Avenue , Charleroi. n Nov. 14 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Community Action Southwest office, 150 W. Beau St., Suite 304, Washington. Community Action does not require volunteers have prior experience filing taxes. Volunteers receive training and certification with the option to earn their certification online. Individuals may volunteer as little as two hours each week and more if their schedules allow. Last year, VITA volunteers helped to file 583 income tax returns in Washington and Greene counties resulting in $534,640 in refunds which were funneled back into the local economy.
