East Franklin Grange eyeing up the holidays

East Franklin Grange 1709 will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the grange hall to plan activities for the coming months, including a Thanksgiving dinner, according to president Bonnie Smouse.”We just bought a new commercial stove and we’re ready to try it out,” Smouse said. Members Caroline Roupe, Martha Williams, Lee Wright and Lonnie Brewster attended the annual session of the Pennsylvania State Grange in Butler Oct. 19 to 22 and will report back to the group on resolutions passed at the state session and to be advanced to the state Legislature. They also will report on installation of new officers and other state activities.Brewster, lecturer for East Franklin, will conduct an activity titled “What is the Grange” to help members more clearly articulate what it means to be a grange member and to help recruit new members for the grange. The group also will discuss plans to travel by chartered bus to Washington Dec. 1 to have dinner at Ponderosa Steak House and to attend the annual Christmas concert by the Washington Symphony Orchestra at Trinity High School. In addition, plans may be made to sponsor a float in the annual Christmas parade Dec. 1 in Waynesburg. The grange made a new batch of apple butter last week and will make plans to sell apple butter and cook books to the public.The grange opens its meetings to the public and invites suggestions on ways to improve charitable and community activities.
