WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg University’s Mock Crime Scene Workshop Saturday afforded high school students the opportunity to train with experts in the criminal justice and forensic science fields. “This mock crime scene shows us what we’ll be getting into and puts us one step closer to the real thing,” Troy Frazier, a high school student from Washington, said. High school students attending the workshop came from Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.Sessions included a crime scene simulation led by a retired member of the Pennsylvania State Police (crime lab) and a laser shot simulation led by Adam Jack, chairman of the department of criminal justice and social sciences and former Westmoreland County detective. Participants learned about crime scenes involving arson and explosives from agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and they had an opportunity to see narcotics detection dogs during a session with the Waynesburg Borough Police Department.Denine Lasch, a senior criminal justice major at Waynesburg University and a group leader for the workshop, helped organize the day’s activities. “This day gives the students an opportunity to both experience what college is like and to also experience the field of criminal justice,” Lasch said. “It lets them see what they’ll be doing if they major in criminal justice.”
