A South Franklin Township couple was awarded $280,000 in damages following trial in a medical malpractice case. Aldine M. and Helen Grandel, both of 108 Security Drive, filed suit against Dr. Carl DiGiorgio of Washington and Greater Washington Radiology in 2008. On Friday, following trial before Senior Judge F. Joseph Leahey, a jury found DiGiorgio negligent in his treatment of Aldine Grandel, who had been diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm. According to court records, DiGiorgio recommended to Aldine Grandel to undergo surgery for his aneurysm. DiGiorio was accused of not consulting a vascular or nephrology specialist prior to surgery, and during surgery, he caused an obstruction to Grandel’s right renal artery. The plaintiffs contended that DiGiorio’s actions resulted in Grandel having to undergo further surgeries and catheterizations, loss of renal function, diminution of his lower extremities and severe restrictions on his mobility.
