WAYNESBURG – Pennsylvania 4-H, the youth-development program administered by Penn State Extension, has been developing life skills in children for a century. During the last 100 years, it has evolved from its agricultural roots into a globally competitive program offering educational opportunities on everything from government to robotics. The 4-H slogan is “learn by doing,” and that is exactly what participating children are doing to prepare for their futures. To recognize the accomplishments of Greene County 4-H youth, the local 4-H County Council, in conjunction with the advisory committee, will host a Centennial Celebration Nov. 4 at the Greene County Fairgrounds. The program will begin at 1 p.m. with a covered-dish dinner. Greene County 4-H Council invites all Greene County residents, especially 4-H alumni, to attend this celebration. Each attendee will receive a complimentary gift. “Not only will the event bring back memories, but it will also recognize the good work 4-H youth are still doing today,” according to Kay Mooney, 4-H County Council leader. Greene County 4-H youth and leaders will be recognized for their accomplishments in 2012. County Council members will share details about the events that Greene County 4-H’ers participated in throughout the past year. In Pennsylvania 4-H is open to all young people, ages 8 to 18, regardless of where they live, what their backgrounds are, or what interests them. Parents are welcomed as helpers or as club volunteers. Those interested in joining the 4-H program are welcome to attend the celebration or they may contact the Greene County Cooperative Extension Office at 724-627-3745.
