Salvation Army camp a big success
WAYNESBURG – “I can’t wait for next year, It’s the best camp ever and I made lots of friends,” Logan Mowl said. This happy 12-year-old has been going to Salvation Army’s Camp Allegheny for three summers now and is a walking advertisement for the 90-acre campground, with its comfortable cabins, wooded nature trails, Olympic-size pool and big fields. “We sent 32 kids this year and hope to have over 40 in 2013,” Sister Audrey Quinn of the Army’s Greene County Service Center said. She held up the flier she was working on for 2013 with a list of things to do while making new friends – archery, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, teamwork cleverly disguised as games, all geared to give kids lessons in Bible-inspired values and memories to last a lifetime. “Signup for next year is March 1,” Quinn said. Between now and next spring, Quinn and her small army of volunteers and sponsors have their work cut out for them making sure no one in the county goes hungry or cold or homeless. Her service center at 131 First St., Waynesburg, is the place to go to receive emergency food, clothing and household furnishings and it’s also a friendly place to volunteer to help sort donations and keep the shelves and racks filled with necessities. “We just finished sign-up for Project Bundle-up and 108 kids and seniors will be shopping for new winter wear this week,” Quinn said. Piles of backpacks on a table outside her office will soon be taken to church to be filled for the upcoming Backpack Program, Also the names are already in for Treasures to Children, a project similar to Angel Tree, where anonymous kids are identified by age, gender, clothing size and taste in toys and would-be Santas can shop with confidence for the child or children of their choice. Distribution for Produce to People will be a week early to accommodate holiday dinners, Quinn noted. Produce will be coming into the Greene County Fairgrounds on Nov. 15 and Dec. 20.
