Chuck Moyer and his fellow veterans at James Perry VFW Post 191 answered the call again Friday when Moyer presented a check for $500 to the 2000 Turkey Campaign. “It’s our way of trying to help,” said Moyer. “In 1966, I signed a contract to help this country. We feel it’s our duty. We served our country, and now we want to help our county.” Thankgiving is less that four week away, and the 2000 Turkeys campaign is in full swing, raising money to provide a Thanksgiving meal for Washington County residents who might not otherwise be able to enjoy one. Near the midway point, the campaign has raised $20,116 – generously donated by individuals, businesses and organizations – and is working toward reaching its goal of $100,000 by Thanksgiving to feed 18,200 Washington County residents in need of assistance. Each donation of $10 provides a Thanksgving meal with all of the trimmings for a family of four. To local businesses are doing their part to raise money. Kang’s Black Belt Academy in Canonsburg will hold a kick-a-thon on Saturday, Nov. 17 (for more information, contact the academy at 724-263-6473). Hogfather’s in Canonsburg is asking people to guess the weight of a giant pumpkin outside of the restaurant, and the money raised will be donated to 2000 Turkeys. Collection jars are located throughout the county, including Super Cuts at Trinity Pointe, Washington County Federal Credit Union, Sam’s Pizza and Kade Health and Rehabilitation Center. “The donations have been tremendous. The bottom line is we have 18,200 people to feed in Washington County,” said David Rhome, Mayor of Canonsburg and a member of the 2000 Turkeys board.
