Wheeling Street in downtown Washington reopened for traffic late this morning, several hours ahead of schedule, after a weeklong paving project. Washington City Councilman Matt Staniszewski said his crew experienced a major setback earlier this week when city’s paver broke down while in use and had to be sent out for repairs. City officials contacted numerous neighboring municipalities and companies to borrow or rent a paver. After numerous attempts, Staniszewski found a paver available from Pittsburgh Asphalt Company. Though the city had to rent a paver, Staniszewski anticipates the project to be under budget. Approximately 38,730 square feet of paving took place on Wheeling Street. The original estimated cost was $39,321. Staniszewski indicated he is compiling work slips and invoices and believes the project to be under budget. Staniszewski also indicated the state Department of Transportation’s contractor, Donegal Construction, has completed the paving portion of Lincoln Street, which should alleviate traffic tie-ups.
