Groups to address hunger, poverty issues at summit

WAYNESBURG – Thousands of people in Greene County struggle each month just to have enough food to feed their families. Food insecurity extends beyond the issues of food to the broader consequences of poverty, including literacy, transportation, accessibility, employment and lack of adequate housing.To address these issues, the Greene County Food Security Partnership and the Greene County commissioners are hosting the second Greene County Hunger Summit from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 13 at the National Guard Readiness Center, 500 EverGreene Drive, Waynesburg. A continental breakfast and light refreshments will be served.This summit is an opportunity for service providers, educators, businesses, government and concerned individuals in Greene County to convene and discuss the need in our community. The proposed agenda includes an overview of food insecurity in Pennsylvania and Greene County, an overview of what’s being done now to support families in Greene County, progress in addressing issues identified at the 2011 Hunger Summit and a time for discussion to address the issues of food insecurity in Greene County.All interested community members and organizations are welcome to attend.Please RSVP to SSmith@pittsburghfoodbank.org, by phone at 412-460-3663 ext. 230, or by fax at 412-460-0418 to the attention of Suzanne Smith.Please bring canned goods or nonpersishable food items to donate to Corner Cupboard Food bank.
