WAYNESBURG – For 18 years, the Waynesburg Social Service League has been hosting its Holiday Extravaganza craft show. This year, the show will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Waynesburg Central Elementary School. In a traditional holiday fashion, art vendors, crafters, event attendees and Social Service League members work together to put on one of the biggest events in the area. Once again, the ladies have worked diligently to provide some wonderful new crafts, including doll houses, live pine wreaths and centerpieces, quilts and hair bows to add to the already extravagant display their shoppers have come to expect. The show is a year-round project for league members as they work to continue the flourishing trend of lining the gymnasium and cafeteria areas of the Waynesburg Central Elementary School with a variety of handmade items. The show offers a special opportunity to meet the finest craft artists and to learn about and purchase their work. There is excitement at every table at the show where the crafts exhibited embrace a striking variety of forms and functions, including some traditions such as homemade candy, baskets, jewelry, wood and photography. In addition to handmade crafts, the show also features a wonderful array of food, from bakers selling their items to the hot lunch items prepared by league members, including homemade chicken and noodles, shredded chicken sandwiches and a variety of homemade warm fruit crisps served with ice cream. Not only does the show bring the community together, but it also offers the Social Service League a tremendous avenue of income to help the children in Central Greene School District. The show is free to the public and perfect for anyone looking for a Christmas gift or just a few hours to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of good crafts and good food. Free supervised baby-sitting is also included for attendees. As one eager shopper remarked, “I don’t recall anything like this in the neighborhood before, where people from all over could just come and have a good time.”Social Service League is a nonprofit women’s organization founded in 1921 by Josephine Denny to benefit the children of Central Greene School District. Members work directly with teachers and school nurses to determine need. Monthly food baskets, clothing, and necessities are provided for the children. Christmas families are sponsored, as well as an annual Easter Egg Hunt is held in the spring and a scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior.
