Uninsured motorist flees accident scene

State police have filed charges against a Waynesburg woman for a hit-and-run accident Oct. 26 in Jefferson Township.Heidi Lynne Hoge, 23, of 155 Woodland Ave., Apt. 53B, has been charged with accidents involving death or personal injury, accident involving damage to an attended vehicle or property and four summary traffic violations for driving carelessly, failing to stop and render aid and failing to notify police of an accident causing injury or death in a timely manner.In a police affidavit, Trooper Jason Clayton said he saw a Chevy Cavalier with an Ohio license plate partially blocking the southbound lane of Route 88 near Price St. when he was dispatched to an accident in Jefferson Township. The driver of the car, Carol Garber, was being evaluated in an ambulance at the scene.Clayton said there was extensive front-end damage and the front airbags were deployed in Garber’s car. He related that Garber told him she was traveling south on Route 88 when another vehicle entered her lane of travel. Garber said she tried to slow down to avoid the accident but the other car collided with her before backing up and fleeing north.Several hours later, Hoge called police to say she was the operator of the vehicle that struck Garber’s car. Hoge told police she was lost and turning around when she entered the oncoming lane of traffic along Route 88 near Price Street, colliding with Garber.She told police she got scared and fled the scene because she did not have insurance on her vehicle. Hoge abandoned her car when it ran out of gas between Marianna and Clarksville before calling police to say she was the person involved in the hit-and-run accident with Garber. Police located Hoge’s car near Bacon Run Road with extensive front-end damage, according to the complaint.A preliminary hearing the matter has not yet been scheduled.
