PITTSBURGH (AP) — A former Pittsburgh state prison guard must serve 12 years on probation, and the first year on house arrest, for abusing inmates and attacking a fellow guard who testified against him.

Tory Kelly, 41, of Aliquippa, was sentenced Monday by the same Allegheny County judge who found him guilty of abusing the inmates -mostly those who were gay or serving child-sex offenses — at the century-old lockup once known as Western Pen. Kelly had also pleaded guilty earlier this month to simple assault for attacking another former guard who cooperated with investigators.

Kelly’s sentence is more than twice as long as that handed down last week to 61-year-old Harry Nicoletti, a former guard characterized as the leader of the abuse. Nicoletti is serving five years’ probation and six months on house arrest.
