Foundation gives $37 million to W.Pa. universities

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Richard King Mellon Foundation has given $37 million to two Western Pennsylvania universities.
A $30 million gift to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh will fund “energy research, education and innovation” at the high-tech research school.
The $7 million gift to Seton Hill University will be used to build a new Health Sciences Center on the campus of the private, Catholic school in Greensburg. That’s about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.
The gift to Seton Hill is the largest in the school’s history.
The Mellon Foundation is named for the philanthropist and conservationist who guided the Mellon financial empire in the middle of the 20th century.
The foundation earlier this year gave Grove City College, also in Western Pennsylvania, $4 million for a new science, engineering and mathematics building.
