Firefighters were busy Saturday night battling two structure fires that occurred just minutes apart.

Canton Township Volunteer Fire Company had an 11:07 p.m. call about a barn on fire across the road from Town and Country Mobile Home Park on Jefferson Avenue.

The barn was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, said fire Chief Dave Gump. He could see the flames from Wylie and Jefferson avenues as trucks headed to the blaze.

A state police fire marshal is investigating the blaze. Gump was unsure who owns the structure.

Gump said the barn was apparently being used for storage, including hay.

Firefighters from Washington were called to assist with their ladder truck. But while on the scene, they received a call of a van on fire in an alley that had spread to a nearby garage on Buena Vista Street.

Gump did not know the name of the property owner whose house fronts on Broad Street. City fire Chief Linn Brookman was unavailable for comment Monday.

Firefighters from South Strabane Township also were called for assistance for the fire in Canton.
