PHILADELPHIA – Forecasters say severe thunderstorms rumbling through Pennsylvania downed trees and power lines and blew the roofs off at least two industrial buildings on opposite sides of the state.

The National Weather Service said emergency officials in Western Pennsylvania’s Venango County reported shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday that numerous trees and wires had fallen on houses and cars, trapping some people in their homes.

Trees and wires were also reported down in Mercer County, where the roof of a steel mill in Heritage had reportedly been blown off.

The (Scranton) Times-Tribune says officials in eastern Pennsylvania’s Lackawanna County report winds blowing trees and wires down and severely damaging an Olyphant veal packing plant roof, where workers said about $2 million worth of meat may go bad if it isn’t refrigerated.
