A Waynesburg man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle while changing a flat tire Monday.

John Jeffrey Eisiminger, 42, was struck as he was servicing a vehicle on the right-hand shoulder of Interstate 79 northbound near the Laboratory exit in Amwell Township. The accident occurred about 5:45 p.m.

State police said the operator of the Ford Focus that hit Eisiminger was Timothy J. Rodriguez, 43, of Bentleyville. Rodriguez was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, with a possible head injury.

Rodriguez’s vehicle left the roadway and struck Eisiminger before striking an embankment.

Eisiminger was pronounced dead by Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco at 7:30 p.m. He had been flown by helicopter to Washington Hospital’s emergency room shortly after the accident. His death was caused by multiple injuries.

Traffic on Interstate 79 northbound was at a standstill Monday evening as emergency crews worked.

State police are still investigating. Information as to what caused Rodriguez to strike Eisiminger or whether charges were pending was not available.
