SWISSVALE, Pa. (AP) — A 75-year-old woman has died after she was trapped in her burning home and could not be rescued by her son in the Pittsburgh suburb of Swissvale.

Fire Chief Clyde Wilhelm confirmed the fatality in Tuesday’s fire and resident Dan Lane identified the woman as his mother, Shirley Lane.

The 45-year-old man tells reporters he heard a loud bang in his mother’s room and heard her screaming, but says “the smoke and fire overtook me and I couldn’t get in there.”

Lane was covered in soot and says he was “lucky to make it out.” Firefighters were also able to rescue his mother’s dog, a Maltese named Lily.

The fire was reported about 5:30 a.m. and news video showed flames coming out one side of the house.
