To highlight Rural Roads Safety Week, which concludes Saturday, and in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Farm Bureau, the Greene County Farm Bureau is sponsoring a coloring contest, a poster contest and an essay contest.

Detailed information regarding the contests will be made available to the five school districts in Greene County. The coloring contest for children ages 4 to 6 provides a sketch of a farmer on his tractor. A winner will be selected from each school district and will be awarded $15. Pages to color will be provided.

The poster drawing contest is for children ages 7 to 12. Posters must include original art work and be drawn or painted on 8 1/2-by-11- inch paper. A winner from each school district will be awarded $25.

Essay contests are being held for students ages 13 to 5 and students ages 16 to 18. All entries for all contests must adhere to the theme, “Don’t Cut Corners: Safety First.”

Winners will be chosen from the 13 to 15 age category and from the 16 to 18 age category to represent each school district. Each winner will be awarded $50.

After winners are selected to represent each school district, one winner from each contest category will then be selected to represent Greene County at state level competition. At the state level, the first-prize winner of the coloring contest will receive a Visa gift card for $25, and second-prize winners will receive a $15 cash award.

First-place winners for the poster contest will receive $50 at the state level, with second-place winners receiving $25.

The first-place essay at the state level will be awarded a $100 Visa gift card, and second place will receive a $50 Visa gift card.

In addition to the previously mentioned contests and categories, students ages 13 to 15 and students ages 16 to 18 may submit a website design directly to state-level competition. Website prizes will not be awarded at the county level. The first place Website design winner will receive a $100 Visa gift card, and the second place winner will receive a $50 gift card from the PA Farm Bureau.

Greene County has been represented by award-winning entries in the past, so Farm Bureau Board members hope that teachers and administrators in all five school districts will ensure that their students are represented at the county level with entries from which the Farm Bureau Board can select winners from each category to be sent on for state level judging.

Entries must be received by the Greene County Farm Bureau by May 15. Questions may be addressed to or requests for more information concerning the contests may be made to Greene County Farm Bureau news director Dr. Lonnie Brewster at 724-428-3004.
