Workers claim Pittsburgh casino thwarting union

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Union organizers are filing unfair labor practice charges claiming chefs, food-and-beverage supervisors and other officials at Pittsburgh’s Rivers Casino are trying to stop some 800 workers from unionizing.
The charges being filed Thursday by Unite Here Local 57 with the National Labor Relations Board say various casino employees have made statements designed to discourage the union, and that workers are being watched and otherwise discouraged from talking about a union.
A casino spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment.
A total of 38 complaints are being filed on behalf of workers mostly in the casino’s food and banquet areas, but also on behalf of parking valets.
The complaints don’t say, specifically, what the workers have allegedly been told about union organizing.
It wasn’t immediately clear when the NLRB will hear the complaints.
