Washington police and members of the Mon Valley dive team spent about six hours Wednesday looking for a gun believed to have been used in a convenience store robbery in which a clerk was shot in the leg.
City police Detective Dan Rush said investigators got a tip that the .22-caliber Tech handgun used in the March 27 robbery at Uni-Mart, 336 E. Maiden St., was tossed in the No. 4 dam off Scenic Drive. The dam is in Amwell and North Franklin townships.
City police continue to look for Shayne Charles Coffield, 23, whose last known address is 247 W. Hallam Ave., Washington. He is charged with attempted homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault and a firearm violation for allegedly shooting the clerk.
Coffield also is charged by state police in connection with a Jan. 21 robbery at Isaly’s, 2400 Jefferson Ave., Canton Township.
Michael Stienstraw, his stepbrother and alleged accomplice in the Isaly’s robbery, and Christopher Pitzarella, his alleged accomplice in the Uni-Mart incident, both waived their cases to court last week.
