Monongahela firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire Thursday evening after flames covered one side of a house.
Chief Frank Hnatik of the Monongahela Fire Department said a neighbor noticed the fire at 315 Third St. after he smelled smoke. By the time emergency crews arrived, the neighbor had contained the fire by using a garden hose.
“The neighbor smelled something,” Hnatik said. “When they looked around, the side was on fire.”
Hnatik said the flames were restricted to the outside of the house.
“It looked suspicious because there’s nothing in the area around there,” Hnatik said, “no electric lines, nothing like that.”
The fire damaged vinyl siding on the house and some of the plywood paneling. Fire crews vacuumed smoke from the building, and the homeowner was able to stay in the residence. Hnatik estimated the damages would cost roughly $4,000. The owner was insured.
The State Police Fire Marshal unit was not notified about the incident. Residents with any information about the blaze are encouraged to contact the Monongahela Police Department.
