STATE COLLEGE (AP) – A central Pennsylvania mayor says she’ll marry same-sex couples if they bring her a license.
State College Mayor Elizabeth Goreham tells WJAC-TV she would have no problem conducting a same-sex wedding.
State Attorney General Kathleen Kane has said she won’t defend a state law defining marriage as a contract between one man and one woman. In that vein, the Register of Wills in Montgomery County has started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, although others in surrounding counties have said they’ll continue to abide by the state law.
Goreham doesn’t have the power to issue marriage licenses, but is empowered to marry couples who already have one. She says she’ll honor the same-sex licenses issued in Montgomery County, should any of those couples ask her to marry them.
