The state Department of Transportation has delayed the switching of traffic onto the new Masontown Bridge until later this month.

PennDOT planned to switch traffic on Route 21 from the old bridge to the completed first half of the new bridge today.

However, as the result of additional work that needs to be done, the traffic switch will not be completed until later this month, said Valerie Petersen, PennDOT spokeswoman.

The first half of the bridge was built next to the old bridge, which has remained in service during construction.

Once traffic is switched to the two lanes on the recently completed half, the old bridge will be razed and the second half of the new bridge will be built.

The contractor on the $49.6 million bridge replacement project is the Brayman Construction Co.

The bridge is expected to be complete in late 2014.
