PITTSBURGH (AP) – The state attorney general’s office has charged 13 people for their alleged roles in a ring that brought Mexican heroin to Western Pennsylvania under the direction of a reputed California gang member.
Jose Luis Pena-Montes, 44, is the only suspect charged Wednesday who is not already in custody. State prosecutors said he’s a member of a California gang known as the Surenos, which formed in prison and has ties to his native Mexico.
Also charged were Robert Carpenter, 46, of Coraopolis and Swissvale, and Marquis Farrow, 30, of Pittsburgh.
Online court records don’t list attorneys for those men, who remained in custody Thursday.
Carpenter allegedly accepted drugs from couriers sent by Pena-Montes, and passed them on to Farrow and a circle of other trusted dealers.
