Rabbit club awards its first scholarships
WAYNESBURG – Two graduating Greene County Rabbit Club senior members recently were awarded the first scholarships from the club.
The two $500 grants were given to Emily Shultz, daughter of Tonya and Rodney Wood of Waynesburg, and Christa Ziefel, daughter of Dave and Cathy Ziefel of Graysville, at the rabbit club show at Tuesday’s Greene County Fair.
Shultz, a 2013 graduate of Waynesburg Central High School, will be attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania this fall and majoring in elementary education.
Ziefel, a 2013 graduate of West Greene High School, will be attending Waynesburg University and majoring in elementary education.
The scholarships are from a private fund and were established in 2011 by club leaders Amber Mankey and Melody Longstreth. Scholarships will be used to reward all graduating seniors from the Greene County 4-H Rabbit Club.
To qualify, members must have completed three years of active membership with one of those years being the year they graduate from high school. They must have been accepted to a university, college or technical trade school and they had to write a 500-word essay on what their experiences as a rabbit club member has taught them and how they plan to use that knowledge as they continue their education. Plans are that all members – who are eligible and apply – will be awarded scholarships in the coming years.
Since establishing the fund, Mankey and Longstreth have worked to raise money to cover the scholarships. This is the first year the scholarships have been presented.
Contributions to the fund may be made at First Federal Savings & Loan.
