COWANSVILLE (AP) – State police say a 4-year-old boy has drowned after climbing a locked gate to get into a neighbor’s swimming pool.

Troopers from the Kittanning barracks were called after Colby Nickel wandered from home in Washington Township, Armstrong County, late Saturday afternoon.

The boy’s family found him motionless in a neighbor’s pool and called 911. Police later determined the boy climbed over the gate that blocks access to the above-ground pool’s deck and either jumped or fell into the water.

Police aren’t sure how long the boy was in the pool before he was found about 7 p.m.

He was flown to Children’s Hospital of UPMC, where he was pronounced dead. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled his death an accident.
