PITTSBURGH (AP) – A 15-year-old charged with burning a 7-year-old boy was ordered to juvenile detention and could remain there until he’s 21, depending on how his rehabilitation progresses, according to the victim’s mother.

The attacker isn’t being identified because his case played out in a closed Butler County Juvenile Court hearing Wednesday, where attorneys also didn’t comment because most juvenile cases are confidential in Pennsylvania.

But police previously said the 15-year-old defendant is the son of a Saxonburg man, 36-year-old Edward Myers, who has been ordered to stand trial on charges he threw flammable nail polish onto the 7-year-old before his son set the younger boy on fire in May. Myers and his son lived with the boy and his mother.

That woman, Laure Halliwell, told reporters her son, Daniel Podskalny, has been undergoing counseling once a week to deal with the third-degree burns that scarred his face and chest.

“Daniel will never be the same,” Halliwell said after Wednesday’s hearing. “He had his first day of school yesterday and was terrified because of the way his face looks.”
