Grants to be shared by alcohol abuse programs

California University of Pennsylvania and the Washington Family Center LEARN Middle School Program will share grants totaling almost $80,000 to support programs preventing underage and dangerous alcohol use, state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California, said.
Daley said the state Liquor Control Board’s Bureau of Alcohol Education is awarding $40,000 to Cal U. for its “Reaching Each in Our Cal Community” program. The two-year effort will focus on proven prevention strategies as well as new advocacy and mentoring programs aimed at reaching students in medical or academic trouble.
The Washington Family Center LEARN Middle School Program through Connect Inc. will be receiving $39,896 over two years to provide its Positive Action Project to at-risk students in grades 6 through 8 at partnering school districts.
The Positive Action curriculum reduces risk factors for alcohol use and abuse and provides intervention strategies to increase student positive self-perception and knowledge of the dangers of alcohol.
The local grants are among 61 statewide awards – out of 115 applicants – sharing more than $2.1 million.
