Pa. county cuts sheriff’s budget over Obamacare

BEAVER (AP) – A Western Pennsylvania county sheriff awaiting trial on charges he threatened a political campaign worker and an online news reporter claims his office was unfairly targeted with a $400,000 budget cut.
But the Beaver County Times reported the county’s commissioners have cut Sheriff George David’s budget because of looming mandates under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
The cuts are proposed from a fund used to pay part-time deputies. The county doesn’t want to pay for health benefits for the part-timers and hopes to keep from scheduling them more than 30 hours a week so the county won’t be mandated to provide such coverage under the health care reforms.
The county plans a one-year trial period to gauge how many workers might be eligible for the coverage before the employer mandates kick in Jan. 1, 2015.
