State police shot and killed a man on Pittsburgh International Airport property early Sunday after, they said, he held a knife at the throat of an abducted 8-month-old baby and used her as a human shield at the end of a pursuit set off by an Amber Alert.
Police did not release the name of the dead man the alert identified as 21-year-old Jared Brown-Garnham.
Trooper Robin M. Mungo said the man threatened to kill the baby with a knife if they closed in on him. The officers attempted to retrieve the child before he cut himself several times and police then fired one round at him after he was no longer was holding the girl.
The alert for the abducted girl was issued about 11:15 p.m. Saturday after Brown-Garnham fled with her from a convenience store along Route 51 in Brentwood. Police were looking for a 2000 Silver Blue Toyota Avalon bearing a West Virginia license plate when the vehicle was spotted by Ohio Township police on Neville Island, a news release from Mungo stated.
At one point, the car pushed its way through a police blockade, and it also rammed several security gates at the airport.
He was shot and killed after he repeatedly rammed one gate, damaging the vehicle enough to set one of its front tires on fire, Mungo stated.
