PITTSBURGH (AP) – Scofflaws who run red lights in Pittsburgh will soon run the risk of being caught on camera.

The city council on Tuesday approved the installation of cameras at up to 20 intersections. Violators will be fined up to $100.

Philadelphia has used the devices since 2005. Last year, the Legislature authorized their use in Pittsburgh and a dozen other communities in the state.

Supporters say the cameras make streets safer for pedestrians and drivers. But critics say they’re expensive and invade motorists’ privacy without having a clear-cut effect on safety.

Pittsburgh council members split 7-2 on the legislation. Mayor Luke Ravenstahl is expected to sign it.

Abington, in suburban Philadelphia, also voted recently to install the cameras.
