PITTSBURGH (AP) – A man is alive after a police officer happened by the scene of the fiery crash of his SUV in suburban Pittsburgh.

WTAE-TV reported the early Thursday morning crash happened after the SUV driven by Matthew Connolly crashed through a fence surrounding the Glenshaw Glass Plant.

The SUV also snapped a power pole and slammed into a wooden shelter that holds discarded glass.

The station says a Shaler Township police officer on routine patrol drove by and investigated after noticing grass in the road.

Gasoline leaking from the vehicle had caught fire, so the officer called paramedics and firefighters who extinguished the flames and pulled the 25-year-old driver to safety.

Connolly was said to be in serious condition at Allegheny General Hospital, but was expected to survive.
