CARMICHAELS -The Carmichaels Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department was called out at 10:48 p.m. Thursday to a fire at their own fire department. The company reported on its Facebook page that a passerby noticed smoke and flames being emitted from the roof in the area of the truck house.

The fire was caused by a malfunctioning heating element used to prevent ice buildup in the gutters. According to the fire company, damage was contained to a six-foot area of gutter and a portion of roofing that will require recoating. It credited the person who called the fire in for helping prevent a situation that could have been much worse.

The fire company is urging the public to take extra caution and inspect all heating and electrical devices.
